Wooden Sheds
Wooden sheds blend in well with garden environments because they have a natural look. They’re great to use as workshops since the wood acts as an insulator that helps regulate temperature. Wooden sheds are great to look at, sturdy, and easy to work on.
While wood is versatile and durable, they are susceptible to leaks, insects and rodents. If not maintained regularly, wooden sheds will deteriorate quickly. Additional expenses will be needed on wood cleaner products because of the regular maintenance required. Good quality wood is also often more expensive than plastic, fabric or steel sheds of the same size.
Plastic Sheds
Plastic sheds are good value sheds because they are easy to install and maintain. They are light in weight but are tough and durable. Unlike wood, plastic sheds are not susceptible to termite or wood-boring insect damage.
While plastic sheds are sturdy, they can’t hold as much weight hanging from the walls as wooden or steel sheds can. Designing it is also limited since they can’t be painted on. The plastic surface will also fade, crack and go brittle if it’s exposed to too much sun. The UV rays of the sun break down the polymers in the plastic which will worsen its appearance over time.
Plastic sheds are basically maintenance free but can be more costly than basic steel shed kits. They also have that “kid’s playhouse” type of appearance which may or may not be your cup of tea.
Fabric Sheds
Fabric sheds are the most affordable out of all the shed types. They look like tents where the frame is covered with fabric and are also set up the same way. You have a wide variety of fabrics to choose from. You can buy them with anti-fungal agents, UV resistance and even “anti-aging”.
Even though fabric sheds are the cheapest and the easiest to assemble, fabric is the weakest shed material. Fabric over time will eventually tear. Since it’s not enclosed, there’s also no security for your valuables from theft and the elements.
Steel Sheds
Steel sheds have all the good qualities found in wooden, plastic and fabric sheds. Unlike wooden sheds, they require less maintenance since they are not likely to retain dirt. Steel sheets are also immune to leaks and rust. Holes in its weather-tight structure are highly unlikely unless intentional. You can also hang heavier tools and equipment on steel shed walls.
Steel sheds are also physically more attractive over a longer period of time. They are not susceptible to rusting so its physical appearance will not change, and its structural integrity will not falter with time.
However, the quality of the steel does differ. Make sure to invest in only durable steel material.
